The Albuquerque Chapter of the Colored Pencil Society of America Art Exhibit
November 30, 1999
Tuesday, June 07, 2011 - Tuesday, September 06, 2011 The Albuquerque Chapter of the Colored Pencil Society of America will hold an exhibit of members’ work at the Cathedral from June 7 to September 6, 2011. An opening reception will be held in the gallery on June 10, 2011 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. More than 75 large works and miniatures will be on display, representing as many as 25 artists. Many of the participating artists are award-winning professionals whose work demonstrates the remarkable versatility of colored pencil as a fine art medium. Visitors will see loose impressionistic, experimental, abstract and semi-abstract work, as well as finely detailed realistic pieces. The “look” of colored pencil changes with every surface onto which it’s applied. Artists add solvents and use burnishing techniques for even more variety in their colored pencil work. The surprise factor is commonplace. A remark that we hear again and again from people who see our work for the first time is, "That’s colored pencil?!" This is an opportunity to see and enjoy loose impressionistic work as well as finely detailed realistic work by award-winning and emerging New Mexico Artists. For more information, contact Audrey Minard (281-1966–aminard42@msn.com). Sponsored By: The Albuquerque Chapter Colored Pencil Society of America

unCOMMON GROUND: Across the Great Divide
November 30, 1999
June 3?August 27, 2011 This exhibition of Roberta Price’s photographic work in the upstairs gallery is in conjunction with the release of her book Across the Great Divide: A Photo Chronicle of the Counterculture (UNM Press, Fall 2010). It features a photographic archive of hippies, communes, architecture, countercultural luminaries and events in the Southwest in the late 1960s and 70s. The photographs add details to the scene and document the story set out in Price’s memoir Huerfano: A Memoir of Life in the Counterculture (University of Massachusetts Press, 2004), a coming of age autobiography/tale set in the Southwest. Her photographs capture the hope, optimism and utopian promise that fueled that period. The curatorial advisor and catalog essayist for this project is Mary Anne Redding, Curator of Photography, Palace of the Governors/New Mexico History Museum. 516 ARTS and the Bethel Center for the Arts are co-sponsoring the national exhibition tour of Roberta’s Price’s work.
unCOMMON GROUND: Worlds Outside This One
November 30, 1999
June 3?August 27, 2011 Concurrently with Across the Great Divide, 516 ARTS will host a related exhibition in the downstairs gallery organized by guest curator Erin Elder, in which a group of international emerging artists respond to a legacy of homesteading, squatting, hermitage and fort building. Worlds Outside This One addresses the urge for momentary acts of self-determination and as more than simply a showcase of blueprints, shelters, journals and maps, it aims to create a set of spontaneous moments and hand-hewn spaces. Looking to those who create ad hoc communities and make-shift structures through art practice as well as daily life, this exhibition illuminates the productive tension between Do-It-Yourself autonomy and shared notions of Utopia. These two exhibitions reach across the divides of time, culture, geography and the chasm separating mainstream media myth and historical reality, debunking some of the clichés about the counterculture. Price’s work is a photographic memoir of the back to the land movement in the late 1960s and 70s, and the accompanying group exhibition curated by Erin Elder explores what those historical experiments mean to contemporary artists today. Both exhibitions are meditations on creating shelter, seeking space and exploring unlimited possibilities.
